爱国中学假南长街袁宅召开第八次董事会，燕树棠、先生、谢循初、邱椿等七人出席，议决该校现校址过于偏远，拟于寒假期间迁移，以便学生就学。此外，讨论经费、招生问题。〔《晨报》，1927年1月28日，第6版〕

拟迁往北新华街小六部口。燕树棠（1891-1984），字召亭，河北定县人，法学家，早年毕业于北洋大学法科，后通过清华学校考试赴美，先后获哥伦比亚大学法学硕士、耶鲁大学法学博士，1921年归国，历任北京大学、武汉大学法学系教授、主任等职。

米来牟致函先生，为成立国际图书馆委员会征询中国图书馆界人士意见。

Dear Sir:

Fifty-seven delegates, representing twenty-three foreign countries, attended the Fiftieth Anniversary conference of American Library Association in Atlantic City, New York, in October, 1926.

Although this was not an international library congress there was much discussion of international library cooperation at the general sessions, in private conversation and in two informal meetings.

I am enclosing a mimeographed report of the two informal meetings. At the second one, which was held at the end of a two weeks'tour, the following resolution was adopted:

The delegates of thirteen different countries who have taken part in the after-conference excursion of the American Library Association and who are desirous to see continued the spirit and the lines of international cooperation thoroughly experienced and discussed during these fourteen days, unanimously recommend to the A. L. A. the following action:

That the American Library Association may take the initiative in this direction and submit to the different national organizations the proposal to discuss the forming of an International Library Committee with the prospect that such discussion may be so far advanced at the time of the Edinburgh meeting of next year that definite action then may be taken by authorized representatives of the different national organizations.

It was understood that the A. L. A., in transmitting this resolution, should call attention to the fact that those who adopted it were not prepared to say to what extent international library cooperation can be brought about through existing or proposed organizations and bureaus.

They did not express an opinion as to whether a new organization is necessary.

A summary of suggestions for international library cooperation, made during the American Library Conference and post-conference in 1926, will be found at the beginning of the mimeographed document.

In pursuance of the expressed wish of the delegates from abroad we invite you to send to us your constructive suggestions for international library cooperation. We shall welcome your personal opinions and the opinions officially expressed by the Association which your represent.

All suggestions received before the end of April will be presented to the A. L. A. Committee on International Relations which will undertake to prepare a summary for distribution to officers of library associations throughout the world and to others interested.

按：李俨（1892-1963），字乐知，福建闽侯人，数学史家，时应供职于陇海铁路局。《杨辉算法》是宋代数学家杨辉三种著作的总称，分别为《乘除通变算宝》《田亩比类乘除捷法》《续古摘奇算法》。“日人钞本”即1916年间李俨委托日本学者三上义夫抄录的关孝和本。此信为文书代笔。

按：Southern Tibet应指Southern Tibet: discoveries in former times compared with my own researches in 1906-1908，通常译为《1906年至1908年西藏南部科学考察报告》，共9卷，1917至1922年间出版。Crown Prince即古斯塔夫六世·阿道夫（Gustaf VI Adolf, 1882-1973），瑞典王储、国王，业余考古学家，对中国艺术持有浓厚兴趣，1926年曾访问北京、山西、上海等地。Eine Routenaufnahme durch Ostpersien，共3卷，记述了1905年赫定对波斯卡维尔盐漠的探险，1918年至1927年斯德哥尔摩出版。此件为打字稿，落款处为先生签名。

先生致信李俨，告知故宫博物院藏《杨辉算法》版本及旧藏源流，并请赐稿与《图书馆学季刊》。

宋《杨辉算法》五卷二本系朝鲜翻明勤德堂本，现藏清宫，为杨守敬故物，如尊处愿影钞一部或能办到，望便中示知。又北大图书馆前已将算书寄奉，大稿如已告竣，尚希寄交南京金陵大学刘衡如先生，以便在二卷一号季刊发表，至为感祷。专此，敬候著祺。

按：1926年9月18日，王云五致信钢和泰，表示商务印书馆将在合同约定外奉赠《大宝积经迦叶品梵藏汉六种合刊》六十本，以表示对其耐心协助的特别感谢。该年12月15日，王云五再次致信钢和泰，告知此书即将正式出版，并寄赠一本样书。
基于以上信息，笔者认为此信大约在1927年春季所写。此件为底稿。

四月二十八日

先生致信李俨，告知北京大学图书馆藏《古今律历考》暂无法借出远寄。

乐知先生大鉴：

本月二十二日曾上一函，谅已达览。《古今律历考》一书，北大以其为明刊善本，颇不欲于此时间远借，如拟摘钞数篇或可代办，校毕之《杨辉算法》仍因邮路不通未能发出，特再奉达，即希鉴察是荷。专此，顺颂时绥。

国际联盟智育合作国际协进社（International Committee on Intellectual Cooperation）科学联合部致函先生，寄上国际联盟图书馆专家委员会决议案并征询意见。

At its session of July 29th 1926, the Committee on Intellectual Cooperation decided to call a meeting of the expert librarians of it Sub-Committee for Bibliography, to discuss the results of the investigation conducted by the International Institute of Intellectual Cooperation on the coordination of libraries and research centers.

The following experts attended this meeting:

Dr. Cowley, Librarian of the Bodleian Library, who presided the meeting.

Dr. Dawson Johnston, European Representative of the Library of Congress.

M. Godet, Director of the National Swiss Library,

Dr. Krüss, Director general of the Prussian State Library,

M. Roland Marcel, Administrator general of the French National Library.

Mr. Bishop, President of the Committee for Foreign Relations of the American Library Association.

According to the wish expressed by the experts, I am communicating to you the resolutions that were passed. It should be noted, however, that these resolutions are still to be endorsed by the International Committee on Intellectual Cooperation at its next session in July.

The Congress of Librarians to be held in Edinburgh will, I hope, offer an opportunity to discuss this matter more fully.

先生东渡日本，调查日本藏《永乐大典》情况，先后得见二十七册，并撰文。

按：先生与夫人同行，亦为蜜月之旅。

六月上旬东京

先生访问日本内阁文库，先询问《内阁文库第二部汉籍目录》之“第二部”所指，负责人员樋口龙太郎解释“第一部”是指日本书目。随后，先生在其带领下观看了《石钟山记》《后山诗注》《忠义水浒传》等，以及存放洋书的贵重书室、荷兰书安正年刊的辞典，还有西博尔德（Philipp Franz von Siebold）的旅行记等。其中，先生着重翻阅的古籍有高似孙《史略》（明版）、《子略》（明版）和《三国志详节》（宋版）。〔樋口生《北京图书馆主任袁守和氏と会谈の记》，《图书馆杂志》第93号，1927年8月，页248-249〕

六月中旬北京

吴瀛和江庸在东兴楼设宴，欲与故宫博物院维持会中的北京大学教授谈薪酬事。先生与陈垣、马衡、李宗侗等人赴宴，席间北京大学教授与吴瀛、江庸多有责难。〔《故宫尘梦录》，页130〕

按：故宫维持会无多资金，只能依赖借款和门票收入维系，本年端午节（6月4日）后并无实质好转，几引发罢工。

六月二十九日

中基会第三次年会在天津召开，批准梁启超、李四光辞去北京图书馆正副馆长的请求，任命范源廉为馆长，先生升任副馆长。〔《中华图书馆协会会报》第2卷第6期，1927年6月30日，页19〕

按：本年12月23日，范源廉病故。

七月一日

先生为王重民《老子考》撰写序言。〔《老子考》，1927年7月初版〕

按：如王重民自序所言“民国十四年，从袁守和先生受目录学，大好之，乃发愤先为《老子考》，因一可藉以抽绎各史志藏书志，一可为研究老子之预备也。”可知此书与先生颇有渊源，也是王重民学术事业的起始点，全书依历史时期（朝代）分为七卷，另有附录六种，以及引用书目、补遗、勘误等。此书为《中华图书馆协会丛书》第一种，分上下两册，梁启超署检。

七月六日

先生代张奚若致信史密斯森协会国际交换业务执行秘书C. G. Abbot，告知希望按月寄出交换品并告知此前收到的箱号，所需书籍今日将寄往国会图书馆。

The last shipment we received from you was the one containing box 1332-1340, 12222 and 12278.

With reference to your request for a copy of F. R. Tegengren's “Iron Ores and Iron Industry of China, 2 vols. Atlas, 1 vol,” we beg to advise that these are being sent to you today for deposit at the Library of Congress. 七月十二日

先生致信李俨，告知代钞四库本《乾坤体义》费用，并寄还《杨辉算法》。

《杨辉算法》顷已交邮寄山西平陆县南街郭宅转上，谅可先达尊览。兹又奉上照四库本代钞之《乾坤体义》两册，共费洋贰拾贰圆贰角壹分柒厘，单据六纸即以附呈。前曾收到洋贰拾叁圆正，所余洋柒角捌分叁厘现存敝处，收到后并希赐示为荷。此上，顺候时祺。

As you have several copies of the Yung Lo Ta Tien, we would like to know the exact Chüan（volumes）of each copy and the number of pages in each volume, etc. May it be possible for you to find out this for us, as we are making a check-list of all existing volumes of this great Encyclopedia.

The Metropolitan Library would like to have a copy of the Catalogue of the Dante Collection, presented by Willard Fiske to Cornell University. If it is still available for distribution, may we hope that you may have an extra copy to spare for our use? If, however, there is any charge, we shall be glad to hear from you.

先生赠《老子考》与文字同盟社。〔《文字同盟》第5号，页25〕

按：本年4月《文字同盟》由文字同盟社（北京西长安街21号）创刊，张蔚瑜、桥川时雄先后负责编辑，第6号介绍《老子考》，后又在第10、11号连载了王重民的《杨惺吾著述考》，第15、16号连载了《北京图书馆略史》。

八月十八日

下午，先生访江瀚（小方家胡同3号），后吴瀛来，商讨抵制内务部拟将大高殿档案迁移的办法，决定一面函呈国务院，一面请人从旁疏通。〔《故宫周刊》第76期，1931年3月21日，第4版〕

按：内务部礼俗司新任司长李升培意欲有所政绩，故主张收回太庙、大高殿两所。故宫博物院同人似欲舍太庙，保大高殿，盖后者为清军机处档案暂放地。

先生致信李俨，告满文本《几何原本》须等陈寅恪回京后代为商洽，并请其寄梅文鼎小像以利叶恭绰编纂《清代名人画传》。

乐知先生大鉴：

顷奉七月廿八日大函，敬悉《乾坤体义》一书已达尊览。《杨辉算法》三册前已于七月九日寄至山西平陆南街陇海郭宅转送，如未收到，请一询为盼。满文译本《几何》须俟陈寅恪君返京，再谋报命。清梅文鼎小像，现叶玉虎先生正在搜集，能惠寄一用否？顷得美国寄来Probabilities图两张，特附函奉赠，即希察入为荷。专此，顺候时绥。

吴瀛访先生，意欲作书告知颜惠庆，恳其致函沈瑞麟。晚，先生回访吴瀛，告知叶恭绰自天津致信沈瑞麟劝其不可夺大高殿，然沈之回信言此事必行。〔《故宫周刊》第76期，1931年3月21日，第4版〕

按：沈瑞麟（1874-1945），字砚裔，浙江湖州人，清末民初政治家、外交官，时任内务总长。

八月二十六日

晚，吴瀛打电话，商量延请之前来大高殿参观的国务院人员，先生觉此办法甚好，遂赞同。

按：本日吴瀛偶会许宝蘅，后者将国务院“无理要求”的缘由告知。盖前次参观大高殿被北大派同人生硬拒绝，遂生此念，不妨诚邀其参观一次，或可自然冰释。〔《故宫周刊》第79期，1931年4月11日，第4版〕

八月三十日

康乃尔大学图书馆华生特藏部主任致函先生，告知所藏《永乐大典》各册卷号并赠北京图书馆Catalogue of the Dante Collection一册。

按：此文所辑为本年6月在日本所见之27册和最近在北京所知者，署名为“同”。

九月一日

北京图书馆委员会议决设立建筑委员会，推范源廉、李四光、周诒春、先生、Conrad W. Anner五人担任委员。〔《北京图书馆第二年度报告（十六年七月至十七年六月）》，页3〕

按：本年3月，北京图书馆将新馆建筑竞赛图案寄送美国建筑学会，该会指定顾理治（Charles A. Coolidge）、亚特理（W. T. Aldrich）等人合组审查。8月24日，顾理治电告首奖为第八号，其余二、三、四等奖分别为第十五号、第一号、第五号。Conrad W. Anner（1889-1960），德裔美国建筑师，本谱通译作“安那”，出生于柏林，1909年移民美国，1919年受聘于洛克菲勒基金会，以北京协和医学院建筑的主要绘图师身份主持征募设计图案，并参与投标，获得第四奖，后充监督工程师。

九月三日

下午，沈瑞麟和刘尚清各带随员四名，到故宫博物院调查，先生、吴瀛、俞同奎、汤铁樵等人招待接洽。〔《故宫周刊》第80期，1931年4月18日，第4版〕

按：刘尚清（1868-1947），字海泉，辽宁铁岭人，晚清民国政治人物，时任农工总长。

先生致信李俨，请其寄李善兰像。

乐知先生大鉴：

顷奉九月一日手札，诵悉一是。满文译本《几何原本》一俟陈寅恪君返京，当即代为接洽。李善兰小像，亦在叶先生搜求之内，倘荷影摹或径以原本见示，至深纫感。附来征求算书启事，亦已代为分送矣。专此布覆，顺候时祺。

先生致信王重民，请其带信转交严侗并告知北京图书馆藏《老子通》版本情况，可就直隶省立第一图书馆馆藏版本补钞。

重民吾兄：

兹奉上致严馆长信一件，赴津时可携交之。《老子通》购到者系明本（共四本缺第一本），半叶十行，行二十字，北京图书馆所缺者系第二十五叶以前者。如能照样影钞，其钞写费当由北京图书馆奉上也。此颂时安。

日人松崎鹤雄在西长安街宣南春设宴，答谢在京的中日两国学人。与席的中方学人有沈兼士、阚铎、陈垣、胡玉缙、黄节、杨树达、先生、程淯、曹经沅、孙人和、黄复生、马衡、马廉、杨虓、钱稻孙，日方学人有石本宪治、小平绥方、桥川时雄、杉村勇造，席间合影留念。〔《文字同盟》第8号，页18〕

按：松崎鹤雄（1868-1949），号柔甫，曾随叶德辉学习版本目录学，时在满铁图书馆任职，为该馆馆务来北京盘桓二十余日。胡玉缙（1859-1940），字绥之，号绥庵，江苏吴县人，清末学部员外郎，民元后曾任国立历史博物馆筹备处主任。孙人和（1894-1966），字蜀丞，江苏盐城人，文献学家。

西北科学考查团理事会假国学研究馆召开会议，周肇祥、刘半农、先生、徐森玉、徐协贞、常福元、庄尚严等人出席。周肇祥为会议主席，报告、议决各案如下：

（一）教育部转新疆省长兼督办军务善后事宜杨增新电阻考察团入境事。议决，（1）备文致内务、外交、教育、实业四部声述考察团筹组经过情形并请四部合电杨增新解释一切，允许该团入境考察。（2）公推周肇祥、徐森玉、先生分往内务、外交、教育、实业四部面见总长详细疏解。（3）公推刘半农到瑞典使馆报告此事，并声明现正在补救。（4）请叶恭绰、周肇祥以私人身份向政府疏通。

（二）聘请庄尚严为本会秘书。

十月二十四日

故宫博物院管理委员会公布大批干事名单，先生位列其中，并接受图书馆副馆长的任命。〔吴瀛《故宫尘梦录》，页143〕

按：此次干事任命约有24名，图书馆馆长本为江瀚，但其请辞，后由傅增湘担任。先生专任图籍部，另一副馆长为许宝蘅，后者专任掌故部。

十一月一日

先生致信李俨，请其寄华蘅芳像。

乐知先生大鉴：

前蒙惠寄李壬叔小像，昨已用毕，另封挂号奉还，尚希察入。华蘅芳小像，叶先生亦甚愿搜集，倘承再为检出寄下，尤深感荷。原图用毕，仍当由敝处奉还无误。此上，顺候时祉。

十一月十三日

陈寅恪致函先生，告所询写经大概内容及其中语言文字，并谓该卷装裱错乱。

手卷中文系《贤愚经》第一卷之一段。此经为六朝时河西沙门八人在于阗听讲时所撰集，并非翻译成书，故可宝贵。详见僧佑《出三藏记集》第九卷《贤愚经序》。手卷回文（书法不甚古，书用毛笔，骤视以为蒙古文）中有菩提萨等字，当是佛经。但手卷既已割裂，装裱时又有错乱颠倒，殊未易知其为何经也。

昨夜匆匆翻阅一过，既无参考书籍，又值学校闹风潮，未能详考，尚乞谅之。匆上，即叩

瑞典皇家图书馆馆长Isak Collijn致函先生，告国际图书馆及目录委员选举结果及章程，请中华图书馆协会签署并推选代表。

Stockholm, November 29, 1927

Dear Sir,

Having been elected Chairman of the International Library & Bibliographical Committee, I have the honour to submit the Resolution voted at Edinburgh on September 30th 1927 at the Fifty Years' Jubilee-meeting of the British Library Association, and signed by the authorized delegates of fifteen national Associations of Librarians. This resolution contains the statutes of the Committee and the appointment of the first Executive Committee.

According to the opening paragraph, this statute of inauguration must be ratified by those national associations which desire to adhere to the Committee and even by those whose delegates have already appended their signature.

Accordingly I would request you to bring about as soon as possible a resolution of your Association ratifying the Statute and at the same time naming the delegate who is to represent and vote for your Association on that Committee.

It would be desirable if an alternative delegate were nominated immediately for the voting delegate, who in case of the inability of the delegate to attend, would be empowered to take his place.

As soon as the delegates, who according to paragraph 6 are to form the first Executive Committee, are nominated, I will constitute that Executive Committee and let it proceed to the election of the first and second Vice-Presidents and of the Secretary, according to paragraph 6, Clause 2.

The delegates assembled at Edinburgh have unanimously welcomed the result of their deliberations, as incorporated in this resolution, as a basis of fruitful scientific co-operation among the Library Associations of their various countries.

I have had great pleasure in accepting office as the first Chairman of this Committee in the hope that this foundation will receive the adhesion and collaboration of all the leading Associations and that our interests in the field of librarianship and bibliography, which we all have at heart, will be successfully furthered through international cooperation, so often desired and now at last brought into being.

故宫博物院图书馆办公场所为寿安宫。

十二月六日

下午二时，故宫博物院图书馆召开会议，议定各课先通力合作办理提书、编目等事，并安排各处人事及南三所、大高殿两处工作人员。〔《许宝蘅日记》，页1216〕阿博特覆函先生，已根据来信获取《美国专利局1912年调查报告》、《专利分类指南》，并将于下次寄出。

Dear Sir:

In compliance with the request contained in your letter of October 15 the Smithsonian Institution has taken pleasure in procuring for the Metropolitan Library a copy of the Report of the Investigations of the United States Patent Office made by the President's Commission on Economy and Efficiency in December 1912 and also a copy of the Manual of Classification of Patents. These documents will be included in the next consignment of exchanges sent to China.

A reply to that portion of your request for certain volumes of the Proceedings of the United States National Museum has been addressed directly to your Library by that museum.
