Walter Simon,(2)Prof. E. R. Dodds,Christ Church Oxford。 S. R. K. Glanville。

Dear Mr. Yuan:
I trust that you must have had a very wonderful time back East with your family. How is Mrs. Yuan and other members of your family? Has Mrs. Yuan come West with you? I hope she does.
Mr. Mok & I want to thank you very much for the most beautiful piece of jade you sent us. It arrived in good condition.
Thank you also very much for the reference you so kindly gave me regarding the words Mr. Rudolph asked me. He said he found them in容媛's金石书录目under金类on p. 2:考古图-北平图书馆藏明刻黑字本. Do you think the words黑字should be墨子?
As we are unable to buy books from China for some time, I feel more free now. I think I can do some research work in my house. Will you advise me what I should do? Any Chinese books about literatures, printing, books etc. worthwhile translating?
Following your advice on buying stocks, I have bought some last December and I am beginning to receive some dividends now. But I think the prices are too high now. I might buy some more when they come down a little.
Regarding two books you asked me to get for you, I have not heard from the girl yet. As soon as she comes to the Library, I will ask her again.
With kindest regards to you & your family.
Sincerely,

Mr. J. F. Ford
British Embassy
Peking
Dear Mr. Ford:
In spite of my silence, I have been thinking of you and your work quite often. I trust that you are enjoying your stay and that Mrs. Ford and children are doing well. I hear that Professor Emperson has left for England and I hope you may give me his address, if you know it.
I am writing to ask for a favor. Mr. Wang Chung-min, the Acting Director of the National Peiping Library, asked me some time ago to collect some money from the Library of Congress for him. In doing so, he should sign a statement(Power of Attorney)before the British Counsel in Peking who will put his signature and seal.
Since I have difficulties in communicating with Mr. Wang, may I request you to get in touch with him and request him to appear before the British Counsel? If he does not want to come to the Consulate, could you or Mr. Bryan call on him, or arrange with him to meet at a certain place, in order to have him sign the power of attorney. Please explain to him that if he does not sign, this account will be closed on June 30, 1952. After that date it would be extremely difficult to claim this amount.
I shall greatly appreciate your assistance in this matter and I hope you could send me the power of attorney after it has been signed and properly sealed. Please ask your friend in Hong Kong to mail it to me by air-mail, if possible.
I have been wondering whether your translation of the Fung Ling's diary will soon be published. Have you got time to work on Hsueh Fu Cheng's travels to Europe?
We have been living at Palo Alto, Calif. And we enjoy our stay here very much. We shall spend some time in England before we return to China.
With sincere thanks and kindest regards,
Yours sincerely,

Dear Dr. Fenn:
I greatly appreciate your courtesy in finding out the Chinese names of several scholars whose scientific writings I was particularly interested. For similar matters I had written to my old friend Mr. Li Siao-yuan at Nanking. But in view of the situation prevailing there, I thought it best not to write to him at least for the time being.
Dr. Martin Yang told me recently that you are making plans to bring out a series of books relating to American policy toward China and Southeast Asia. This program interests me very much, as there has been so much misunderstanding on the part of these peoples concerning American motives and ideals.
As you may recall, I wrote a short article(in Chinese)during the war on Sino-American cultural relations. It was published by the Institute of Chinese-American Cultural Relations at Chungking, but I have no copies at hand. It could be enlarged and new materials should be added. If you are interested in bringing out booklets of this and similar kind, I shall be glad to assist you in this undertaking.
My bibliographical work here is not pressing, so I have plenty of time for writing monographs of this kind.
With sincere greetings and kind regards.
Yours sincerely,

July 8th 1952
Dear Dr. Yuan,
Many thanks for your note of July 3rd. I am delighted to hear that you have been keeping up your interest in Outer Mongolia.
The book on which Peter Onon and I have been working is not an autobiography, but a biography of SukeBatur. Peter is not in this morning, and I do not have the manuscript at hand, but my recollection is that the Revolutionary Mongolian People's Party was created not in 1918, but in 1919 and 20, and not in Moscow but in a series of meetings, first in Urga, and then in Kyakhta and Verkhny Udisk. After this, a group of delegates of the new party did proceed to Moscow, but neither SukeBatur nor Choibalsang was in the party.
I think you will find the essential facts confirmed in a recent Chinese translation of the “official” biography of the late Choibalsang by Tsedenbal. Hoover Library has this, and Mary Wright knows about it, because she drew it to my attention. It contains numerous quotations from Choibalsng's “Short History of the Revolution.”
We are still hoping to get out to California for a few weeks in August and September.
If we can do so, it will be a great pleasure to see you again.
Very sincerely,
Owen Lattimore

Dear Dr. Yuan:
It was a pleasure to hear of you and to learn of your interest in our literature program.
I fear that Dr. Yang gave you a not entirely correct impression of the plans we have in mind. There is no thought of books on American policy or on cultural relations. Rather we are concerned with providing for Chinese in Southeast Asia effective statements of important democratic and Christian values and ideals. Most of these will be in the form of newspaper or magazine articles.
We appreciate your offer of help and, if it turns out that we need anything of the sort you suggest, we shall be only too happy to turn to you.
With warm regards and best wishes, I am,
Cordially yours,
William P. Fenn

Dear Dr. Hummel:
On the eve of your departure for the Far East, I hate to bother you with matters of no immediate concern to your mission. There is, however, one project which I have always been greatly interested, viz, the publication of the studies on Oracle Bones by Professor Tung Tso-Pin. In view of its importance to Sinology, I trust you would also take a similar interest.
While much has been published on the subject from the finds of An Yang excavations, there are still many more significant materials in the collection of “Academia Sinica” which have not been systematically studied. As Professor Tung is the only person capable of doing this kind of work, support should be given to him in order to enable him to devote his entire time to this work.
Letters received from Professor Tung indicate that he is now so heavily burdened with administrative work that he simply cannot find the time to do any scientific research. But since he had made rubbings of these bones with which he can work equally well, he wishes to come to the United States to continue the work on this project. This would be an ideal arrangement, if some institution in the United States would sponsor his visit. I know that both Chicago and Berkeley are very keen on this project, but financial difficulties have prevented its early realization.
It has occurred to me that the collection of oracle bones in the possession of Mr. Menzies deserves further study. If Professor Tung can come over, he and Mr. Menzies may find it desirable to collaborate together toward the early publication of the results. As both are not enjoying good health, it is of utmost importance that immediate support should be extended to them.
I feel that if it is not easy to arrange a visit from Professor Tung at this time, one of the Foundations should be approached with a view to obtaining a special grant for this project, so that Professor Tung may be relieved from administrative duties and may devote his entire time to research.
When you arrive at Taipeh, I hope you will get in touch with Professor Tung and see some of his work. On your return you may discuss further with Professor Creel, Dr. Graves and others, so that some concrete plan may be worked out at that time.
With best wishes for a most pleasant journey,
Sincerely yours,
T. L. Yuan

August 14, 1952.
Dear Mr. Yuan,
It has been several months since our last correspondence. I am happy to know that two of your children are entering the graduate school. Time certainly flies rapidly. I always visualize that from Tsing Hua days to the present it is just a vivid wink of a colorful dream.
Mrs. Tai has been offered a position as the librarian of Lincoln Community School. She goes to her school library at 7.45 every morning from Mondays to Fridays and returns home at 5. p. m. From our flat to the school, it requires an hour in travel by train and bus. I stay at home to look after the flat, to shop some of our daily necessities and to study Spanish at my leisure.
I am very happy to know that you are given the opportunity to compile a Bibliography on China as a supplement to Cordier's. Your work will be much appreciated by scholars in future.
Mrs. Tai joins me in sending our kindest regards to Mrs. Yuan and yourself.
Yours sincerely,

Hamburg, 24th August, 1952
Dear Mr. Yuan,
I have still to acknowledge receipt of your letter dated 18th June for which I thank you most sincerely. In the meantime, I received the seven photostats from the Library of Congress which I urgently need for my research work about Wang Cheng, I should like to express my heartfelt gratitude for your assistance in this matter. I understand the amount of Dollars 3.15 has been debited to your account by the Library of Congress for which I would like to reimburse yourself. I regret to inform you that I was unable to follow your request and pay DM 10.80 to Messrs. Harrassowitz & Co., as under the prevailing foreign exchange laws the payment in German currency of amounts due by a foreigner is not permitted. I, therefore, requested Mrs. von Winterfeldt who is at present in the United States and whom you will probably know from China, to remit to you for my account US Dollars 7.--. As the Photoduplication Service of the Congress Library had copied some wrong pages by mistake, I have directly requested the Service to copy the right pages. I should be obliged if you would kindly also bear the costs for these photostats using the balance of the afore-mentioned amount.
When in future you are interested in buying books from Germany, I would recommend to you to let me know the title of the book so that I may order them at Harrassowitz and pay for same.
As to German literature concerning Communist China, I should like to draw your attention to the following facts:
There are practically no books published in Western Germany on the new China.
Books on China printed in Eastern Germany are mostly translation from Russian and English versions and I suppose you are not interested in such publications.
As I had previously informed you the local booksellers cannot obtain books from the Russian zone for different reasons.
In the meantime, I requested my relatives residing in the Eastern Zone to send me some books on China and I am pleased to inform that I have just received the first book which contains the memoirs of an Austrian surgeon about his experiences in China since 1939/40. He is a close follower of Communism. I am sending you the book by order mail as a printed matter and trust it will reach you safely.
With many thanks and kind regards,
Yours faithfully,

September 10, 1952
Dear Dr. Yuan:
Thank you for returning my copy of the 1893 T'ung-wen Kuan Calendar. I trust that you were able to find some useful material therein.
In going through the material, I have collected on the Kuang-fang yen-kuan, I have discovered that Lou Tseng-Tsiang was one of four graduates of the French Department of that school who were recommended in 1890 to be sent to Peking for examination by the Tsungli Yamen to enter the T'ung-wen Kuan. His name is the only one of the four which appears nowhere in the 1893 T'ung-wen Kuan Calendar. I have no explanation of this and wonder if you have one. Of course, he may have gone to Peking, been examined, and assigned somewhere else without entering the T'ung-wen Kuan at all; I know of other cases of this kind. Yet in Mr. Lou's biography in Who's Who in China he states that he was one time a student in the T'ung-wen Kuan. I would appreciate any light that you can throw on this matter as it might help to explain some similar cases-for example, one in which four graduates of the Mathematics Department were sent to Peking and none of their names appears in the 1893 Calendar.
An earlier letter of yours raises another question about the Kuang-fan yen-kuan. You mentioned a French professor in the school whom I presume was a friend of Mr. Lou. According to the Kuang-fan yen-kuan materials that I have, French was being taught there in 1881 by a Chinese, although the document which mentions this fact also states that he was not entirely satisfactory and that the Chinese Minister to France had been asked to look for a competent French teacher. I know from another document that French was being taught in 1894 by a Chinese. It is quite possible that the Frenchman you inquired about taught in school some time in the interim and I would appreciate your sending me any evidence that you may have of that fact. As you can see, the material that I am having to depend upon for the description of this Shanghai school is very spotty indeed. As you no doubt have discovered, the Kiangnan Arsenal记hardly mentions the school.
Sincerely yours,

My dear Director Yuan,
I was so glad to have your news the other day. The letter reached me in an envelope stamped‘Oxford’and so I do not know whether the California address means that you have left the Congress Library and are doing something else. Please let me know because I need hardly say that I am very much interested in your personal well-being, and that of your family.
I have written to Miss Yates, who is the Secretary of the China Society(of which I am a member of Council). I enclose the list of publications still available with prices. At the same time, she raised the question whether you wish to consider re-joining the Society. The annual contribution is still only 1 guinea and if you or your Institute were to join the Society you would receive future publication free of charge. I add the name and address of the Secretary in case you wish to correspond with her directly.-Miss Joan Yates, the China Society, 133 Fellows Road, London, N. W. 3.
I shall be sending an offprint of my latest article on‘erl’in a few days, as soon as I have received my offprints which should be the case in a day or two. I suppose you received the preceding part some time ago?

Dear Dr. Fahs:
For the past three years I have been working on a comprehensive bibliography of China in Western languages. In undertaking this task, I have had financial assistance from the China Foundation.
Owing to its limited income and its commitments elsewhere, no further support from that Foundation would be forthcoming. Since it is a specific, short-term piece of bibliographical research, I wonder whether your Foundation would be interested in lending your support, so that the present work may be brought to early completion.
After having gone through the important collections in the East, I am making a survey of the major collections along the Pacific coast. I expect to spend a year here and the Mid-West before returning to Washington.
In view of the uncertainty of obtaining assistance in the future, I am hoping to turn all of my manuscripts to the Library of Congress after the completion of Part 1, Section 1. I am therefore particularly anxious to complete it on which I have already devoted much of my time. I am sure that with your support, it could be successfully concluded. May I therefore apply for a grant-in-aid from your Foundation for the academic year July 1953-June 1954?
For your further information, a brief statement regarding the project is herewith submitted. In view of the scholarly nature of the undertaking, I hope the application may receive due consideration from you and your colleagues.
Sincerely yours,
T. L. Yuan
